About Bedfordview Blinds: Everything Measured on the Ridge

Bedfordview Blinds is a made-to-measure window shading service for houses built around a view, on one of Johannesburg's higher ridges. The view is the reason the glass is that size, and the afternoon sun is the reason it needs managing. Nothing is on a shelf and nothing comes in a standard size.

Built on the ridge, and it shows

Bedfordview's living rooms and balconies command long views over the CBD and Ekurhuleni because the suburb sits higher than most of Johannesburg realises, and that same height means west-facing glass up here takes the afternoon sun harder than almost anywhere else in the metro. A blockout roller solves the glare and kills the view in the same motion. The honest fix is usually a low-openness sunscreen that cuts ultraviolet and heat while keeping the skyline legible through the weave, backed on the hardest elevations by something outside the glass.

There are two generations of windows to fit. The older streets carry big established homes with corniced ceilings, deep reveals and generous proportions, the kind of window a timber venetian was made for. The newer stock along the ridge runs to floor-to-ceiling sliding doors and full-height glass walls built to frame the view, which is where motorised rollers, panel glides and external venetians earn their keep. The range covers both: roller, day/night, venetian, skylight and shaped, vertical and panel, cellular, concealed and recessed, motorised and automated, external venetians, roller shutters for shading, folding-arm awnings and zip screens, plus repairs and restrings of blinds we did not fit.

Where we work

Bedfordview and the ridge suburbs against it. Senderwood, the leafy neighbour to the south, with large stands, mature gardens and a mix of steel, aluminium and sliding frames added over decades. Linksfield Ridge, the same high ground running in from the west, where architect-designed homes were built around the view from the start and reach decides the specification. Bedford Gardens, the older, greener heart of greater Bedfordview, with picture rails, tall narrow windows in deep reveals and the occasional bay or arch nobody wants to lose. And Meyersdal, a newer secure estate further south on the Alberton side of the N3, built to an open-plan brief with wide sliding walls that want a coordinated plan per elevation rather than one blind per window.

We know the difference between an established Bedford Gardens window and a new-build sliding wall in Meyersdal, and the same sun-path reasoning applies across all of them. It is the housing stock and the exposure that change, which is why every opening is measured individually rather than a house being quoted by room count.

How a job runs

A job runs the same way every time, with nothing ordered online and nothing guessed over the phone. Your enquiry comes in by the on-page chat or the form, and one of our expert consultants will contact you shortly to book a free in-home measure. That visit covers every window on the property, with fabric and finish samples on the table and swatches held up against your actual glass at the hour that matters, and openness, motorisation and privacy are talked through room by room against the light each elevation actually gets.

A written quote follows, priced per window with the options itemised so you can compare choices instead of guessing at them. Pricing is confirmed in writing after the measure, and lead times are confirmed in the same document; a budget range from the window list in the Field Guide is a planning figure only. Once the quote is approved, everything is made to those measurements and installed cleanly, with the operation demonstrated on handover. The diary fills early because the measure takes time to do properly, so booking ahead helps if you need a particular day.

What we do not do or claim

We do not quote from a photograph or a size chart. We do not describe our roller shutters as security: they are shading, aluminium slats rolling down outside the glass to stop sun, heat and glare before they reach the room, and a security-rated product is a different specification available on request. We do not issue heritage permits or estate approvals; we raise the question at the measure and design the interior option so there is a good answer whichever way it goes. We do not sell an awning as a rain product, and we do not fit one on an exposed ridge stand without a wind sensor.

We also do not only sell new. Snapped cords, tired mechanisms and a blind that has hung crooked since the repaint are usually a restring or a refit rather than a replacement, and if replacing genuinely costs less than repairing we will say that too, plainly, at the visit. And we do not motorise a window for the sake of it: on a reachable window it is a comfort upgrade, on a three-metre glass wall or a stairwell it is the only sensible answer, and we tell you which is which.

Child safety as standard

Every corded and chained product we fit uses tensioners as standard, so the loop is anchored taut to the wall and out of reach, and at the measure we will always flag wand-tilt, cordless or motorised options for nurseries and children's rooms. Motorisation removes the cord or chain entirely, which makes it the safest operation for households with small children and the only practical one for the floor-to-ceiling glass this ridge is known for. Battery or wired depends on the install, and the route for the cable is settled at the measure rather than after a wall has been painted.

How to get in touch

Use the enquiry form or the chat button in the corner; both are on every page and both lead to a consultant calling you back to arrange your free measure, with no call centre and no obligation. If you would rather read first, the Ridge and Light Field Guide is free with no sign-up, and you can ask for it marked up against your own elevations without booking a visit. Say you are still researching and nobody will chase you. The contact details you give us are used only to arrange that consultation call-back and quote, handled under POPIA and never shared with a third party.
